WICKS, Lars

MN 10th Inf Co E. Residence: Freeborn Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota. Born “Lars Anfindsen Vig” in Norway in 1813. Was a Quartermaster Sergeant in the Norwegian Army. Came to America in 1849 with his wife and a small child. Settled first in Illinois, then in Fillmore County, Minnesota, and finally in Freeborn County. Civil War: Age 43. Enrolled 18 Sep 1862. Mustered 13 Oct 1862. Corporal. The Regiment was active in subduing the Indian uprising in southwest Minnesota, and was present at the Mankato hanging of 38 Sioux in December 1862. Regiment was sent south in October 1863. Discharged from the service with his regiment, 19 Aug 1865, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Post war: Moved to southern Illinois in 1875 and, in the 1880s, to a farm near Elliott, Ford County, Illinois. Died in 1894. Buried in Pontoppidan Lutheran church cemetery near Elliott.
