Civil War: Age 23. Unmarried. Enlisted as Private on 3 Mar 1862 at Chicago, Illinois. Mustered the same day. Commissioned Second Lieutenant at Jacinto, Mississippi, on 31 Jul 1862. Named commander of the Pioneer Corps in November 1862. Promoted to First Lieutenant, 8 Jun 1863 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Promoted to Captain on 3 Jun 1863. Named commander of the Pioneer Brigade in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Became Quartermaster of the Detachment in Chattanooga 7 Sep 1864. Mustered out with H Company on 13 Feb 1865 at Chattanooga.
