Rosemaling was an unexpected experience that I began with my in-laws in the fall of 1985. We participated in beginner and intermediate classes taught by Jan Piddington. When the beginner class ended, I participated in a weekend class taught by Gary Albrecht, using acrylic paints. After the class, I began experimenting with acrylics, and I now prefer them.

I joined the Norse and Wisconsin State Rosemaling Associations for educational opportunities and potential growth. The relationships with the members, along with the classes taught by Vesterheim Gold Medalists, helped me grow. Through Vesterheim, I attended a class taught by Norwegian rosemaler Nils Ellingsgard and also one taught by Ragnvold Frøysadal. By the end of 1991, I had to discontinue rosemaling classes and competitions. Life was busy for our family.

In 2019, I picked it back up and joined a weekly rosemaling group. Lorre Paulman provided leadership and instruction for the group. I was excited to join after my long absence. Sadly, our group ended because of COVID, but following the COVID shutdown, I joined the Wisconsin State Rosemaling Association again, resumed taking classes, and renewed friendships.

Many teachers have contributed to my Gold Medalist achievement. Most recently, Jan Norsetter, Andrea Herkert, and Trudy Peach each gave me something new to explore and experience. Their knowledge has been integral to my growth and success. Additionally, the Stoughton Senior Center rosemaling group has provided me with inspiration and encouragement. I am grateful for everyone who has been a part of my journey.
