William Torjesen was born in Kristiansand, Norway in 1897. When his father died, he was sent to a technical school where he studied architectural and furniture design. He also began to take courses in painting. In 1920, he emigrated to New York City where he studied under John Sloan who was a leading figure in the Ashcan School of realist artists. Torjesen was an active member of the Norwegian Art and Craft Club of Brooklyn, New York. Torjesen died in 1971.
