Chair of pegged construction decorated with Dragon Style carving. Four decoratively rounded legs, three of which continue up to support curved backboard. Set-in supports under seat and between legs near floor. Loose board of newer origin set on legs to provide seat. Back piece has flat carving and dragon heads at ends.
From the estate of early 1920’s tennis star, Molla Burstedt Mallory. This chair style was made between about 1895 and 1905 when Dragon Style carving was popular in Norway and the US. Dragon Style emerged after excavations of the Viking ships in Norway in the 1890s.
