Lena Qualley was born in Ridgeway, Iowa in 1871. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with artists such as Fredrick Macmonnies, Antonio de La Gandra, Lucien Simon, and Charles Cottet in Paris. She was the first director of the Toledo School of Art and later was the Art Supervisor for the New York Public Schools. Qualley died in New Jersey in 1952.
The subject in the portrait is not identified, but it is thought to be a family member.
