Olaf Brauner was born in Oslo, Norway in 1869. He emigrated to the United States in 1883, and eventually became chairman of the Department of Art in the College of Architecture at Cornell University in New York. Brauner is known for his portraits and landscapes. He died in New York in 1947.
This painting is a full-length portrait of the Norwegian-American artist Christian M. S. Midjo. Midjo was also a professor at Cornell University during the 1930s and 40s. He spent quite a bit of time in California, where he developed a unique style of presenting the western landscape.
