This quilt is made of repeating blocks of Norwegian flags
  • Date 1895-1925
  • Place of Origin Minneapolis, MN
  • Creator Unknown

This quilt is made of repeating blocks of Norwegian flags that are made with machine piecing and applique techniques. It is hand-quilted and has a light blue cotton backing, and a thick cotton batting.

This version of the Norwegian flag was introduced in the late 1890s. It is likely that the quilt dates from independence in 1905, or perhaps the Norse-American Centennial in 1925.

Before coming to Vesterheim the quilt was exhibited at the Nassau County (New York) Museum in Quilts: A Voice in Silence, on women’s political statements.
