Sverre Hanssen was born in Austnesfjord, Lofoten, Norway in 1891. Hanssen came to the Twin Cities from Norway in 1924, already a well trained decorator. Working both as a free lancer and with various companies in the Minneapolis area, he took part in the decoration of about 70 churches including St. Agnes church and other public and private buildings. Much of his time was devoted to the Minnesota State Capitol, where he did restoration as well as original work. Hanssen died in Seattle, Washington in 1968.
