WI 15th Inf Co E. Residence: Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin. Born in Sandefjord, Norway, 10 Oct 1836. In 1850, his father moved to Kristiania (now Oslo), where Henry became a clerk in a hardware store, and later a bookkeeper in a railroad freight office. In 1857 [His brother says 1856; Wilson’s biography says 1858], Hauff, George Wilson and Samuel Thodberg came to the US. Wilson became a Lieutenant Colonel. Thodberg joined the Confederate Army. Hauff worked for a time in a hardware store in Madison, Wisconsin. The three friends went off to Texas for a time. Hauff and Wilson came back to Wisconsin, where Hauff worked as a bookkeeper for a firm in Stoughton. Civil War: Age 25. Unmarried. Enlisted 14 Dec 1861 at Stoughton and mustered into WI 15th Inf Co G in Madison, Wisconsin on 11 Jan 1862. Commissioned First Lieutenant on 11 Jan 1862, effective from 14 Dec 1861. Was named acting Adjutant of the Regiment on 3 May 1862. Commissioned Regiment Adjutant at Danville, Kentucky, on 8 Oct 1862. Promoted to Captain of Company E on 25 May 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with rank from 21 Jan 1863. Missing in battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863, and found to have been killed in that action. The rebels held the battlefield for another two months and his body was never identified. He lies beneath an “Unknown” marker in the national cemetery at Chattanooga.
