BENDIXON, Ole M.

WI 15th Inf Co D. Residence: Columbus, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Civil War: Married. Age 28. Enlisted for three years on 27 Nov 1861 at Portage City, Wisconsin. and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 8 Dec 1861. Private. Promoted to Corporal on 1 Jan 1862, and to Sergeant on 1 Dec 1862. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863 and sent to Nashville, Tennessee. Was home in Wisconsin in 1864. Mustered out with Company D on 13 Feb 1865 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. On 24 Jan 1867, he was awarded rank of Brevet (Honorary) Captain, with rank from 8 Oct 1862, in recognition of bravery he had displayed at Perryville. He had been sick in a hospital at Perryville and when he heard that D Company was going into action, he got permission from the surgeon to go with his company during the battle. He grabbed his rifle and reported for duty. Post war: He was granted a pension of $6 a month because of a wound to his left leg resulting in varicose veins. In 1893, he was living in Lewiston, Wisconsin.
