US Navy. Born 9 Dec 1869 in Denmark. Spanish-American War: Coxswain. Enlisted from New York. Awarded the Medal of Honor in connection with the sinking of the U.S.S. Merrimac at the entrance to the harbor of Santiago de Cuba on 2 Jun 1898. Despite heavy fire from the Spanish batteries, Clausen displayed extraordinary heroism throughout the operation.
