DAHL, Ole Rasmussen

WI 15th Inf Co B. Residence: Bloomer Prairie, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Born in Kristiansunds Gjeld, Nordmøre, Norway, 19 Jul 1817. Went to sea at age 17. Went to military school in Trondhjem, studying surveying. To America in 1854. Civil War: Age 44. Enlisted for three years on 29 Oct 1861 at Chippewa. Spent several weeks recruiting enlistees for the 15th. Mustered 13 Feb 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Promoted Quartermaster Sergeant in Company H on 1 Jul 1862. Transferred from Company B to Regimental Headquarters on 7 Aug 1862. Reduced to ranks at his own request on 7 Oct 1862 and transferred to Company H. Commissioned Second Lieutenant of Company B on 30 Jan 1863, with rank from 20 Jan, and First Lieutenant in Company B at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on 15 Mar 1863. Was Quartermaster Officer at Mississippi River Island No. 10. Was topographic engineer in 2nd Brigade 1 Mar 1863; moved to 3rd Brigade in May 1863; then to 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Oct 1863. Taken prisoner near Morristown, East Tennessee, 1 Mar 1864, and held in Macon, Georgia. Mustered out 12 Mar 1865. Post war: In Nov 1880, he was granted a pension of $17 a month because of general disability as a result of his prison life. Died in Tomah, Wisconsin, 30 Dec 1882, and was buried in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
