WI 15th Inf Co C. Residence: Norway Township, Racine County, Wisconsin. Born there. Civil War: Age 18. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 11 Oct 1861 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mustered 2 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Corporal. Served as an escort with the provision transport from Stevenson, Alabama, on 13 Oct 1863. Served as hospital steward. Promoted to Sergeant on 7 Nov 1864. Mustered out with Company, 1 Jan 1865, at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Was named Brevet (Honorary) Captain 20 Aug 1867, effective from 20 Sep 1863, because of bravery in battle at Chickamauga, when, after his captain was killed, he took a position in front of his company and encouraged his men by both word and deed to hold their ground even though they were hard pressed on all sides.
