He came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Claus Thomesen”, which sailed from Skien, Telemark, on 25 May 1849 and arrived in New York on 8 or 11 Aug 1849. They came to Palmyra Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, and moved later to Utica township, Dane County, Wisconsin. Hed was married on 6 Feb 1863 to Kjerstine Andrea Jørgensdatter Vipeto (1843-1937). Three children. Civil War: Farmer. Age 32. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’10”. Enlisted for one year on 4 Feb 1865 at Waupaca, Wisconsin. Enlistment credited to Scandinavia, Waupaca County. Mustered 15 Feb 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $100, $33.33 paid. Private. Post war: Buried at West Koshkonong Lutheran Cemetery, Wisconsin; stone reads “2 Jul 1832 – 16 Sep 1886”.
