WI 15th Inf Co B. Residence: Gale, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. Born “Jens Gulbrandson” in Norway in 1827. Married Sunnive Julsdatter Sohus. They came to America in 1853, where he took the name “Jens Bring Gilbertson”. Civil War: Age 37. Farmer. Married with seven children. Hazel eyes, light brown hair, dark complexion, 6’. Enlisted for three years on 21 Jan 1864 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Mustered there the same day. Private. Recruit. Joined B Company at Knoxville, Tennessee. Seriously wounded in a battle near New Hope Church [Pickett’s Mill], Georgia, 27 May 1864, and sent to a nearby hospital, then moved north to a hospital (in Madison?). Transferred to Company H, 1 Dec 1864. Transferred to WI 13th Inf Co I on 11 Jun 1865. Discharged from the service 29 Jul 1865 because of the wound in his leg. Post war: In 1872, he and his wife and eight children moved to Grand Meadow township, Mower County, Minnesota. Gilbertson died in 1894 and is buried in Bear Creek Lutheran Cemetery in Frankford Township, Mower County.
