Born “Knud Magnesen Langeland” on 22 Jan 1847at Voss, Hordaland, Norway, son of Magne Helgesen Langeland and Gjertrud Knudsdatter Bjørgo. He came to America with his parents and two siblings on “Olav Kyrre”, which sailed from Bergen and arrived in New York on 28 Jun 1848. They came to the Koshkonong settlement in Dane County, Wisconsin, and in 1853 moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa. Civil War: Age 18. Enlisted 31 Oct 1864 and mustered the same day. Private.
