Johnson left sick at Helena, Arkansas, 13 Aug 1863. Sick at Memphis, Tennessee, since 28 Aug 1863, according to regimental report of Dec 1863. On detached service as a clerk in medical department at St. Louis, Missouri, 7 May 1864. Reduced from Corporal to the ranks to take effect 1 Jan 1865. Corporal John P. Johnson, on 1 Apr 1865 was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps by order of the Secretary of War, and assigned to Company I of the 23rd Regiment.
