Enlisted for three years on 17 Oct 1861 at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 12 Dec 1861. Named Corporal 1 Jan 1862. Was a guard with the commissary supply train for a while in 1862. Wounded and taken prisoner at Stone’s River, Tennessee, 31 Dec 1862. Paroled at St. Louis, Missouri, in 1863. Promoted to Sergeant 18 Sep 1863. Wounded and again taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863. Died at Andersonville Prison on 16 Sep 1864 and is buried there in grave 8886. Was named Brevet (Honorary) Second Lieutenant 25 Feb 1867, with rank from 21 May 1865.
