IA 6th Cav Co D. Residence: Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Born “Knud Lagesen Præstegaarden” on 25 May 1818 in Vangen, Aurland, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, son of Lage Knudsen Vangen and Sigrid Andersdatter. Knud was married in 1847 to Torbjør Torsteinsdatter Ramsøy. They came to America with daughter Gjertrud on the brig “Henrik Wergeland”, sailing from Bergen about 12 May 1849 and arriving in New York on 5 Jul 1849. They came to the Koshkonong settlement in Dane County, Wisconsin, and later moved to Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Civil War: Age 44. Enlisted 29 Oct 1862. Mustered 29 Oct 1862. Private. Served in the Indian and Civil wars. Sent out to the Western Territory to control Indians. Discharged from the service for disability 10 Jan 1864, Sioux City, Iowa.
