WI 15th Inf Co C. Residence: Norway Township, Racine County, Wisconsin. Born 10 Nov 1842 in what became Racine County. Civil War: Age 20. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 11 Oct 1861 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mustered 2 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Corporal. Fought in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky, and Stone’s River, Tennessee. Appointed Sergeant 1 Apr 1863. Wounded, shot through an ankle, at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863, and sent to a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Transferred to 68th Indiana, 1 Feb 1864. Returned to the Wisconsin Fifteenth on 1 Apr 1864. Fought in the battles of Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Pickett’s Mill, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro and Lovejoy Station. Mustered out with C Company, 1 Jan 1865, at Chattanooga. Post war: In 1865, he married Susan Moirland of Dane County, Wisconsin. They had six daughters. Later, living in Dorchester, Clark County, he was granted a pension of $4 a month because of the wound to his right ankle.
