WI 42nd Inf Co A. Residence: Scandinavia, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Born “Jørgen Olsen Steensland” on 28 Sep 1821 in Torrisdal, Drangedal, Norway, the son of Olav Baerulfsen Vraalstad and Marte Jørgensdatter Lone. He came to America in 1843, to the Muskego settlement in Wisconsin. In 1844, he moved to Ixonia Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He was married about 1848 to Asberg Johanne Elingsdatter Naas (1813-1887), who had had two previous husbands. About 1856 he was farming near Scandinavia, Waupaca County. Civil War: Farmer. Age 44. Married. Blue eyes, auburn hair, light complexion, 5’8”. Enlisted for one year on 24 Aug 1864 at Waupaca, Wisconsin. Mustered 1 Sep 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $100. Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant. Died of disease in a military hospital at Cairo, Illinois, 12 Mar 1865, and is buried in the National Cemetery, Mounds City, Illinois.
