MN 2nd Cav Co G. Residence: Linden Township, Brown County, Minnesota. Born “Guul Olsen Nerli” on 21 Jul 1844 in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway, son of Ole Knudsen Nerli and Mari Guulsdatter Jokerud. He came to America with his parents and three siblings on “Embla”, which sailed from Christiania on 9 May 1849 and arrived in New York on 6 Jul 1849. They came to the Jefferson Prairie settlement in Rock County, Wisconsin; then moved about 1852 to Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and later to Linden, Minnesota. Civil War: Age 20. Enrolled 28 Dec 1863. Mustered 4 Jan 1864. Private. Served in Indian and Civil wars. Discharged from the service with his company, 29 Dec 1865. Post war: He married on 6 Apr 1871 to Anne Jakobsdatter Christensen Lofton (1855-1893). Eight children. In 1890, he was living in Madelia, Brown County, Minnesota. Gul died 27 Jun 1927, and is buried in Lake Hanska Cemetery. His brother Knud served in the same unit.
