OLSON, Rollin

WI 15th Inf Co E. Residence: Argyle, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. Born “Ole Olsen Kalnoebrud” on 10 Nov 1832 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway, son of Ole Hansen Gundstad and Kari Iversdatter. He came to America on “Benedicte”, which sailed from Drammen, Buskerud, on 8 Jun 1849 and arrived in New York on 22 Aug 1849. He came to Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin. He was married 5 Aug 1854 to Marin Pedersdatter Smerud (1837-1913). Civil War: Age 30. Married. Enlisted 4 Dec 1861 in LaFayette County. Mustered 8 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Designated Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant 1 Jul 1862. Missing in battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863. On April 1864, Olson was taken up from missing in action at Chickamauga; because it was learned that he was prisoner of war in Richmond, Virginia. He had suffered a severe ankle wound in the Chickamauga fighting. He was paroled and sent to the parole hospital at Annapolis, Maryland, on 3 Sep 1864. Promoted from Sergeant to First Sergeant 1 Sep 1864. Commissioned First Lieutenant on 10 Nov 1864. Discharged from the service on 16 Dec 1864. (final separation 18 Jan 1865). Post war: Granted a pension of $4 a month because of a wound to his left foot. Died 31 Mar 1898 in Green County, Wisconsin. Buried in Lutheran Cemetery, Jordan, Wisconsin.
