OVERSON, James

WI 15th Inf Co C. Residence: Norway Township, Racine County, Wisconsin. Born in Telemark, Norway about 1928. Civil War: Age 23. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 5 Nov 1861 at Waterford, Wisconsin, and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, on 2 Dec 1861. Private. Promoted to Corporal. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863, and was sent to Chattanooga and then to Madison, Wisconsin. Was found to be unfit for further service and was discharged there on 9 Aug 1864. He was named a Brevet (Honorary) Captain on 20 Aug 1867, effective from 20 Sep 1863, for bravery displayed during the Battle of Chickamauga. When his captain was killed, Overson took a position in front of C Company and encouraged his comrades to hold their position even while they were hard pressed. Post war: He lived in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was granted a pension of $16 a month because of the wound to his left foot. He died before 1907.
