MN 3rd Inf Co D. Residence: Hartland Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota. Born in Christiansand, Norway, 20 Sep 1843. Came to America in 1854 to Wisconsin. Came to Freeborn County in 1858. Civil War: Age 17. Enlisted for three years on 12 Oct 1861. Mustered at Fort Snelling. Private. Found his father Hendrick Peterson there and joined him in the 3rd. Sick with chronic diarrhea and fever. When the 3rd Infantry surrendered at Murfreesboro, August was paroled with the regiment. Co D was assigned to campaign against Indians. Mustered out at close of the war, Sep 1865. Post war: He worked in the Government Land Office; still later he became Register of Deeds. Died 15 Mar 1904. Buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Albert Lea.
