RUDE, John H.

WI 19th Inf Co B. Residence: Mt. Prairie, Minnesota. Born in Telemark, Norway 26 Sep 1843, a son of Oliver Rude and Cornelia Thompson. The Rude family came to America in 1861 to Mt. Prairie. Civil War: John enlisted at Houston, Minnesota on 2 Jan 1862. Mustered at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Private. The Company was assigned to guard prisoners at Madison, Wisconsin, for six months; then moved to Norfolk, Virginia, detailed there as a guard, and at Portsmouth, Virginia. Took part in the battles of Drury’s Bluff, Petersburg; and Fair Oaks, all in Virginia. Rude became sick and was in sent to hospital at Norfolk. He was mustered out at Washington DC. Post war: Went back to Houston to be a farmer. Married Martha Peterson. Five children. In 1873, he moved to Neilsville and became a carpenter and painter. In 1909, he went to Minot, North Dakota.
