They immigrated to Illinois in 1849 and came to Winneshiek County in 1851. Civil War: Age 18. Unmarried. Blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, 5’7”. Enlisted for three years on 6 Jan 1862 at La Crosse, Wisconsin, and mustered on 13 Feb 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. While at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, he developed rheumatism in his right shoulder. Was with the provisions transport from Stefenson, Alabama, in October 1863. Sick in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 28 Nov 1863. Mustered out with Company H on 13 Feb 1865 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Post war: Married 26 Jul 1873 to Bertha Tobiasen at Luther College, Decorah, by Rev. N. Brandt. They had twelve children. Farmed in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County. They lived in Canoe Township; he was postmaster at Springwater, Iowa. Died 27 Oct 1930, age 86. Buried at Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery near Decorah.
