SORENSON, Engebert

WI 36th Inf Co K. Residence: Spring Brook, Dunn County, Wisconsin. Born 7 May 1830 at Hverveneiet farm in Norderhov in Ringerike, Norway. Left Norway for America 6 Apr 1854. Came to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Married Anna Larson of Hesselbergeiet on 2 Sep 1856 at Waupun, Wisconsin. Moved to Elk Mound, Dunn County, in 1859. Civil War: Farmer. Age 35. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’8½”. Enlisted for three years on 29 Feb 1864 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Mustered 23 Mar 1864 at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $300, of which $60 paid. Private. “An excellent soldier. When present ever done his duty willingly and promptly. Was in the spring campaign until North Carolina. At surrender of Gen’l Lee. Was in many engagements last season.” Discharged from the service 12 Jul 1865 at Jefferson, Indiana. Post war: An accident at his home near Elk Mound cost him his life. He was loading logs onto a wagon sled. His horses started ahead, causing the loaded sled to run over him crushing his legs. He contracted pneumonia and died on 26 Mar 1871. Buried at Barum Lutheran Church, Dunn County.
