WI 15th Inf Co B. Residence: Chicago, Illinois. Born in Ygre, Voss, Norway, in 1841. Came to America in 1853. Worked for the Chicago Journal as a typographer until 1861. Civil War: Age 21. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years 27 Sep 1861 at Chicago. Mustered 8 Jan 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Assigned to Company A, where he became a Sergeant. Became Second Lieutenant in Company B on 14 May 1862. Became First Lieutenant in Company B 1 Nov 1862. Illnesses, mainly diarrhea, left him unfit for service, and he was given leave. He returned in time to join the Battle of Stone’s River. His illness returned and he resigned 30 Jan 1863. After the war, he went into Chicago politics, eventually became a city police officer.
