Enlisted for three years on 20 Apr 1861 at Janesville. Mustered 11 Jun 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Discharged from the service for disability on 1 Aug 1862. At age 21, he enlisted again, for three years, on 30 Dec 1863 at Janesville. Mustered there the next day and assigned to WI 15th Inf Co A. Bounty $402. Corporal. Joined Company A at Strawberry Plains, Virginia. Transferred to Company H, 20 Dec 1864 at Whiteside, Tennessee. Transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps at Whiteside on 20 Jan 1865. Transferred to the 24th Infantry. Transferred to Company I in the Wisconsin 13th Infantry on 10 Jun 1865. Discharged from the service 30 Jun 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana, by reason of being supernumerary non-commissioned officer. Lived in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, Dakota Territory. In February 1864 he was granted a pension of $8 a month because of a gun shot wound to his left shoulder.
