VIRCH, Andrew Nelson

MI 24th Inf Co E. Residence: Detroit, Michigan. Born 14 Jul 1845 at Lillethun in Vossestranden near Bergen, Norway. He was a son of Borjonel Nelson. Andrew came to the US to Chicago 7 Jun 1854. Moved to Detroit in 1855 when his widowed mother married Peter Anderson, a railroad master mechanic. In March 1857, they moved to Chicago where his mother died in June 1857. In 1858, Andrew went back to Detroit to live with an aunt. Civil War: Enlisted for three years on 15 Aug 1862. Appointed commissary Sergeant. Discharged from the service 30 Jun 1865. After the war, he worked as a carpenter in Chicago until 1870, at which time he moved to Dane County, Wisconsin. He there married Betsey Nelson Kjerie, daughter of Knute Kjerie, on 15 Feb 1873. Three children. She died 30 Jun 1880. Virch married again to Lena Fleasram, daughter of Andrew Fleasram, on 15 Aug 1883. They had six children.
