Magnus Gjertsen was born in Kopervik, Norway in 1904 to Gert Manius Gjertsen and Olava Larsen. He came to Chicago at the age of 22. He studied under Professor Charles Schroeder at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1927-1930 and later studied in Munich, Paris, and Rome. While in Chicago, Gjertsen exhibited at the Chicago Norske Klub and the Art Institute of Chicago’s annual exhibition of Illinois artists. He traveled to Norway in 1936 then returned to the U.S. sometime after 1937. He lived in New York State and Pennsylvania until the end of WWII when he returned to Norway. Gjertsen died in 1987.
This painting was exhibited in Haugesund, Norway in May 1983.
