Sara Raugland was born in 1862 in Elgin, Iowa. She studied art in Minneapolis, and was able to make a living painting altar centerpieces. It is estimated that Raugland painted over 200 altar paintings in her life, and that her work is in churches around the United States as well as in China and Norway. She died in 1960.
Painted in 1895, this painting is based on St. John, Chapter 20, where Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene in the garden.
