WI 47th Inf Co E. Residence: Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. Born in Ringsaker parish, Hedmark county, not far from Lillehammar, Norway, 18 May 1838. Came to America with his parents in 1859 to Wisconsin. Worked as a printer on “The Emigranten”, a Norwegian newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin. Married 6 Feb 1863 at Madison to Julia Davidson. Civil War: Age 27. Printer. Married. Blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, 5’7”. Enlisted for one year on 28 Jan 1865 at Madison and mustered there the same day. Bounty $100. $33.33 paid. Private. Promoted to Corporal on 8 Feb 1865. Reduced to ranks 11 Apr 1864. Regiment proceeded to Louisville, Kentucky, and Nashville and Tullahoma, Tennessee, assigned primarily to guard duty. Mustered out 4 Sep 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Post war: Moved to Minnesota; then to Decorah, Winneshiek County Iowa, in 1868 to work on the Norwegian newspaper “Posten”, and he did so for 43 years. Nine children. Died 24 Jun 1919 at Decorah.
