Enlisted for three years on 12 Aug 1862 at Viroqua, Wisconsin. Mustered 14 Sep 1862 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Private. “For good conduct was promoted to Corporal.” Was with the regiment until August 1863. Then sent to a hospital in Memphis. Rejoined again in December at Helena.
